Statement on the Golden Plains Windfarm Project death

15 November 2024

At the beginning of this week, we heard the tragic news that a 36-year-old construction worker had been killed while at work on the Golden Plains Windfarm Project, south of Rokewood, Victoria.

This week’s fatal workplace incident comes mere months after the CFMEU published an article outlining concerns about OHS in the renewables industry.

This is a good example of how administration is undermining the efforts of the union to keep workers safe. Simo is one of our finest, and has been working hard on a tough wicket to unionise renewables projects.

For all the hype about the CFMEU having total control wherever it goes, the contractor in this case has ignored warnings about a very serious safety issue. And as usual, WorkSafe will now spend three years before slapping the company with a lettuce leaf and give them a small fine for a completely avoidable death, the cause of which was accurately foreseen by the union.

The weakness of WorkSafe highlights that a militant CFMEU with a strong presence onsite is the first and last real line of defence for construction workers.
